Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City
The Strategic Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City
Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City is one of the nation's major Air Force bases and was named after the first Native American Major General of the US Air Force, Clarence L. Tinker of Oklahoma who died in the line of duty during the early period of World War II in an air strike against Japanese forces.
The Importance of Tinker Air Force BaseThe approximately 9 square-mile Tinker Air Force Base has the distinction of being one of the few military bases in the nation situated in a metropolitan area. It was the result of the efforts of a few businessmen and civic officials of Oklahoma City in the early 1940s while the War Department was indeed on the lookout for a location in central United States to establish a supply and maintenance depot.
Tinker Air Force Base serves as the headquarters of the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center of the Air Force Material Command (AFMC). This organization manages missiles, aircraft, avionics, engines, accessories and software on a worldwide scale. It is one of only three Air Logistics Centers in the nation. The 72d Air Base Wing is Tinker's host unit.
Tinker has quite an active history, playing a major part in preparing B-29s for combat and repairing B-17 and B-24 bombers during World War II. The Korean conflict was another opportunity for the air force base in Oklahoma to prove its capabilities, maintaining planes to keep them flying and channeling important supplies to the epicenter of the conflict. During the Vietnam War the base provided communications support and logistics for the Air Force units in Southeast Asia.
With such important institutions as well as many tourist attractions around, Oklahoma City is not only a strategic but also a worthwhile destination to visit or spend your vacation.
